Why Are the Tips of My Spider Plant Turning Brown? 4 Causes and Fixes

Why Spider Plant Tips Turn Brown: 4 Causes & Fixes
Why are the tips of my spider plant turning brown, the cause is usually one of four things: water quality and salt buildup, direct sunlight, too much fertilizer, or incorrect watering. Fix the cause step by step, and new growth will come in green and healthy.
1. Water Quality and Salt Buildup

The first and most common reason the tips of a spider plant turn brown is water quality. Tap water can be high in fluoride and other salts. Over time, these salts build up in the soil, which limits new growth and causes brown tips.
How to Tell If Your Water Is the Problem
You don’t need to get your water tested. Simply look for these signs in most of the potting soil:
- A white powdery crust on the soil surface
- Compacted soil
If you see them, your water is likely high in salts.
How to Fix It
- Switch to filtered water.
- Flush the soil by watering it heavily once. This removes most of the accumulated salts.
- If the buildup is severe, change the soil media (a simple soil mix is shared below).
Soon you’ll see your plant growing healthy, green leaves again.
2. Direct Sunlight

Spider plants are indoor plants that like moderate light. In a spot with direct sunlight, many leaves curl and the tips turn brown.
My own plant’s leaves are curling and developing brown tips because it was recently kept in direct sunlight. If your spider plant is in a sunny spot, move it right away, or it can gradually die.
Where Should You Keep a Spider Plant?

Here’s a nursery secret. You may have seen spider plants and other indoor plants kept together under green nets at nurseries. That’s because these plants don’t like direct sunlight.
The simple conclusion: move your spider plant to a bright but shaded spot, and it will recover very soon.
There are many more such methods. After visiting nurseries and talking to nursery owners, I wrote a short book on nursery secrets to enhance plant growth. It’s linked Here.
3. Too Much Fertilizer

Fertilizing too heavily can also cause brown tips and leaves on a spider plant, and the plant may stop growing. Fertilizer is something to watch closely when caring for this plant.
How to Fix Over-Fertilizing
- Change the soil, or
- Water the plant heavily so the excess nutrients leach out.
Use a Balanced Organic Fertilizer
Next time, use a balanced organic fertilizer. At the beginning, I had a limited understanding of fertilizers, but after I discovered this one, the growth of my indoor plants improved significantly, and I didn’t run into over-fertilizing problems.
It’s an organic fertilizer made from a simple mixture of:
- Cow dung
- Leaf compost
- A small amount of rock phosphate
These ingredients are listed To Buy, along with the fertilizer making Guide.
4. Incorrect Watering

Another common reason the tips of a spider plant turn brown is incorrect watering. Partly because of their soil media, beginners often struggle to water indoor plants properly.
Both underwatering and overwatering make the leaves turn brown from the edges and slow growth. With underwatering, you may also notice the leaves curling.
The Right Way to Water a Spider Plant
- When the soil is dry, water it thoroughly.
- If the soil is still moist, don’t water.
Spider plants have tubers in their root area that store moisture, so leaving them in dry soil for a day or two won’t cause a problem. Watering before it’s needed can.
Simple Soil Mix for Spider Plants
Good soil media solves this issue at the root. I use my own mix of garden soil, sand, compost, and other ingredients in specific ratios. Make Potting mix at home and use it for your spider plant.
