How to Grow Pothos (Money Plant) Super Fast? (Secret Care Tips)

Pothos, also known as the money plant, is a very common indoor plant. It is very hardy and low-maintenance. In this post, we will see how you can get maximum growth from your pothos by following a few care tips. So, let’s understand what these are.

What’s Its Growing Season?

The first and most important thing you need to understand for growing a lot of leaves on your pothos plant is its growing season. When you grow a plant in its ideal season, it performs really well, makes new leaves, grows bigger and bushier, and stays protected from diseases and pests.

For the pothos plant, the growing season starts as soon as the temperature begins to rise in spring. This plant belongs to rainforest regions.

In such areas, the temperature is high, with a lot of humidity and rainfall. Basically, it grows well in warm temperatures with high moisture in the air.

I live in a moderate climate region where winters are slightly cool, but summers are very hot. We also get a full rainy season in the middle of summer. That is why I was able to multiply this plant easily.

I grew multiple cuttings, and they all rooted successfully. During the growing season, the plant produces new shoots continuously. If you also live in a moderate climate region, you should start growing it as soon as spring begins. In colder regions, summer is a great time to grow pothos.

In winter, my plants did not die or drop their leaves because the winters are not very cold in my region. However, if the temperature in your area drops below 5°C in winter, you should bring the plant indoors to keep it safe.

It is a perennial plant, so there is nothing to worry about. Winter is just a slightly difficult period for pothos. You may see some leaves turning yellow and falling off. Simply bring the plant indoors or place it under the shade of larger plants, and it will survive.

What Soil Media Does It Need?

Another important factor for achieving strong growth in your money plant is the soil media. Soil plays a crucial role because pothos is a moisture-loving plant.

If the soil dries out too quickly, it can stress the plant. Your soil should be slightly sandy, allowing it to retain moisture while still providing good drainage.

In hot weather, soil dries out very quickly, which is not ideal for pothos. If the soil is too hard, it can also restrict the plant’s growth. You may notice small leaves, patches, and weak or stunted growth.

Should It Be Placed in Sun or Shade?

Another crucial factor for growing pothos in pots is choosing the right location. If you place your plant in an ideal environment, you will notice rapid growth, new leaves, new branches, and even aerial roots forming. In forests, pothos naturally grows under the shade of larger trees, where it receives indirect light.

Ideally, your pothos plant needs indirect light, high humidity, and warm temperatures. If you have a spot where sunlight comes only for a short period, you can place your pothos there and partially shade it with other larger plants.

This setup mimics its natural habitat and promotes fast growth. Direct sunlight is not suitable, as it can cause leaf burn and stunted growth. So, avoid placing your pothos in direct sunlight.

Which Fertilizer Works Best for Pothos?

For fertilizing a pothos plant, you need a good-quality fertilizer, as it is a heavy feeder. It requires a consistent supply of nutrients. The leaves grow larger when the plant receives proper nutrition. In its natural habitat, pothos climbs trees and absorbs nutrients through its aerial roots.

So, we need a strong fertilizer to support healthy and fast growth. I use a homemade organic fertilizer for my pothos plant, and it has been working very well. The new leaves are larger and shinier since I started using it.
